Fly into Mammoth for the whole Eastern Sierra, not just the mountain
Everyone books Mammoth Yosemite Airport for the ski hill. It's also the closest commercial runway to Mono Lake, June Lake and Bodie — and, in summer, the Yosemite high country. Here's the honest range.
Mammoth Yosemite Airport gets booked for one thing: the mountain, six miles up the road. But the same runway sits in the middle of the Eastern Sierra, and the icons people drive US-395 for hours to reach are a short drive from the tarmac — not the mountain, the whole region around it.
Advanced Air flies MMH nonstop from Hawthorne (LA) in about 55 minutes, and from Carlsbad (San Diego North County) in about 1 hour 25. It's the only close commercial airport out here: Bishop (BIH) is United-only and 58 miles south, and Reno is about 140 miles north. Land in Mammoth and you haven't just reached a ski town — you've reached the trailhead for Mono Lake, June Lake and a ghost town, without giving US-395 a full day each way.
The whole Eastern Sierra from one runway
MMH sits about six miles east of Mammoth Lakes on US-395, which happens to be the spine of the Eastern Sierra. From the runway, the region's marquee day-trips are genuinely close — these are consensus drive times from the town, verified against the local tourism board and mapping tools:
- Mono Lake — about 42 minutes north. The tufa towers at South Tufa are the postcard; sunrise over the still water is the reason to set an early alarm. MMH is unambiguously the closest commercial airport to it.
- June Lake — about 30 minutes north. The 16-mile June Lake Loop past Gull and Silver lakes is one of the Sierra's prettiest short drives, and June Mountain's own getting-here page points visitors at MMH.
- Bodie State Historic Park — about 1 hour 15 north. A gold-rush ghost town that California keeps in 'arrested decay' — left standing exactly as it was found. Two honest notes: the final ~3 miles are unpaved, and the park closes when winter snow shuts the road.
- Convict Lake — about 10 to 15 minutes south. Practically a proof point: you can be under 12,000-foot walls at a lakeside restaurant before your rental car's AC gets cold. Nothing else with scheduled service is anywhere near this close.
The local tourism board already sells Mono Lake, Bodie and June Lake as a single full-day loop. MMH is the only close airport for all of it — which is exactly why the loop starts to make sense as a fly-in, not a marathon drive.
"Closest airport" only means something if the place is actually close. For Mono Lake, June Lake and Bodie, Mammoth Yosemite is that airport — and it's the only one flying a Los Angeles and San Diego crowd straight to the trailhead.

About Yosemite — the honest version
You will see MMH called "the closest airport to Yosemite." That's true, but only if you're precise about which Yosemite. The park is enormous, and the two answers point at different airports.
For the Yosemite high country — Tuolumne Meadows and the Tioga Pass east entrance — MMH really is the closest commercial airport. The Tioga Pass entrance is about 53 to 60 minutes from the runway, and Tuolumne Meadows about 1 hour 15. This is summer only. Tioga Pass (SR-120 over the crest) is a seasonal road that typically opens late May and closes with the first heavy snow. For 2026 it is open — it opened May 15, the earliest in eleven years, after closing on November 12, 2025. Always check the live road status before you plan the day.
For Yosemite Valley — El Capitan, Half Dome, the classic view — MMH is not your airport. The honest closest is Fresno (FAT), about 1.5 hours to the south entrance and roughly 2.5 hours to the Valley floor. And in winter, when Tioga Pass is closed, there is no short way from Mammoth into the park at all: the only route is around the south end, 150-plus miles of driving. So fly MMH for the high country in summer, and fly Fresno for the Valley. We'd rather tell you that than lose you at the gate.
Do you need a car? And which season?
For these day-trips, yes — pick up a rental at the airport counter. Mono Lake, June Lake, Bodie and Convict Lake are all US-395 drives, not shuttle stops, so the car is the point. (Mammoth Lakes itself is genuinely walkable and car-free if the mountain is your whole trip — new for summer 2026, the $10 ESTA Express shuttle even covers the airport-to-Village leg on flight days — but the Eastern Sierra loop is not.)
Season decides your range. June Lake and Mono Lake are open year-round; Convict Lake is a ten-minute standby whenever you land. Bodie closes when the road snows in, and the Yosemite high country only exists as a Mammoth day-trip while Tioga Pass is open — roughly late spring to mid-autumn.
