The closest airport to the redwoods isn't the one you think
Everyone drives six hours to stand under the tallest trees on Earth. There's an airport fifteen minutes from the old growth — here's the honest map of what's near it.
The tallest living things on the planet grow in a 40-mile stretch of the far-northern California coast. Most people reach them the same way: a long drive up US-101, the last stretch in fog, hoping the pullout they read about is the right one. Almost nobody knows there's a scheduled airport in the middle of it.
That airport is Del Norte County Regional (CEC) in Crescent City, and Advanced Air flies it nonstop from Oakland in about 66 minutes. This is the honest version of what that gets you — because "closest airport" only matters if the trees are actually close, and here they are.
What's genuinely within reach
The redwood parks aren't one place — they're a chain of state and national parks stitched together for 50 miles. Crescent City sits near the northern end of that chain, which is where the deepest old growth is. From the runway:
- The northern groves — 10 to 15 minutes. Stout Grove and the Grove of Titans, in Jedediah Smith Redwoods, are the closest ancient forest to any scheduled airport in California.
- Howland Hill Road — 15 minutes. A ten-mile dirt lane that drives straight through thousand-year-old trees. No RVs, no trailers, no crowds most mornings.
- The Klamath River mouth — about 30 minutes. Overlooks where gray whales pass close to shore in spring, and a Roosevelt elk herd that's usually grazing the meadows.
- Fern Canyon and Prairie Creek — about 40 minutes. The green-walled canyon that stood in for a Jurassic set; a free vehicle permit is required May 15 through September 15.
Fly to Arcata/Eureka (ACV) instead — the airport most people find first — and you land about 80 miles and an hour and a half south of that northern old growth. It's the closer airport to the southern parks; it is not the closer airport to the big trees.
"Closest airport" only helps if the trees are close. From Crescent City, the old growth is a fifteen-minute drive. From most of the alternatives, it's still a road trip.
Advanced Air flies Oakland to Crescent City nonstop — about 66 minutes in the air instead of roughly 6.5 hours up US-101. There's also a nonstop from Hawthorne (Los Angeles) — about two hours up, and about 1 hour 42 back. Fly up after work on a Friday and you can stand under a 300-foot tree before Saturday's coffee cools.
Where the honesty line is
A guide that pretends everything is close is useless, so here's the boundary. The Avenue of the Giants — the famous drive through Humboldt Redwoods — is real, and it's worth it, but it's two and a half hours south of Crescent City. If that specific drive is your whole trip, fly ACV. Trinidad and Sue-meg State Park are about 80 minutes south too; also ACV's territory. Crescent City wins the northern parks decisively and loses the southern ones honestly.
A first weekend, roughly
Land Friday evening, pick up a pre-booked rental (there's no rideshare in town), and stay near the harbor. Saturday is the whole point: coffee at a local cafe, then Howland Hill Road slow, Stout Grove's half-mile loop, and the Grove of Titans boardwalk, which stays open year-round. Sunday, time the Battery Point Lighthouse — it sits on a tidal island you can only cross at low tide, so check the table before you plan the morning — and fly home in the afternoon.
