What it has is a runway: Advanced Air has flown Grant County to Albuquerque since January 2019 — the airline's original New Mexico Essential Air Service route — about an hour in the air, $91 flat, seven days a week with multiple departures most days. The alternative is 4.5 hours over Emory Pass.

The Gila Wilderness — the first designated wilderness on Earth — starts 44 miles up NM-15, and those miles take two hours. That's the point: no freeway exit, 700-year-old cliff dwellings, and a hot-springs trading post that's been scooping ice cream since 1964.
A gallery district that pulls its weight
Bullard Street keeps a working Arts & Cultural District — galleries open 5–7 PM the first Friday of every month — and Fleming Hall holds the largest permanent Mimbres pottery exhibition anywhere. Admission to a thousand years of Mimbres painting: free.
Trail town, officially
Silver City is the Continental Divide Trail's first Gateway Community, and downtown hosts the Tour of the Gila, a long-running UCI stage race, in the spring. Thru-hikers walk 3,100 miles to get here. You can fly in about an hour.

First Friday is monthly — time the trip to it if you can. The Buckhorn is closed Sundays; if your Day 2 lands on one, move Pinos Altos to your first evening instead.

44 miles, two hours, 700 years
- Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument — 44 miles up NM-15 that take 1.5–2 hours each way — the first 25 miles are narrow, with 10–12% grades and no center line. Then a one-mile loop through 700-year-old rooms
- Doc Campbell's Post — Gila Hot Springs since 1964 — homemade ice cream and CDT resupply
- NM-35 via Lake Roberts — the gentler road down; mandatory if your vehicle runs over 20 feet
The monsoon-proof day
- City of Rocks State Park — a volcanic pinnacle field 28 miles southeast off US-180 — paved access, day use 7 AM–9 PM, open year-round
- Faywood Hot Springs — next door, open daily 11–8. Private tubs are bookable; some public soaking areas are clothing-optional — know the etiquette before you pick your pool
- Return the car at SVC — 45 minutes before departure is all a nine-seat airline needs
The Gila is live country: check current fire restrictions and NPS road conditions before the mountain day. In monsoon season (July–September), drive up in the morning and be off the mountain before the 2 PM build-up — the sky handles the afternoon drama.

44 miles that take 1.5 to 2 hours each way. NM-15's first 25 miles are narrow with 10–12% grades and no center line, and there's no cell service past Silver City. Vehicles over 20 feet take the NM-35 alternate via Lake Roberts. Worth it — you walk through 700-year-old rooms.
What about the altitude?
Town sits at about 5,900 feet, with Pinos Altos and the Cliff Dwellings higher still. Plan a mellow first half-day, drink more water than feels necessary, and go easy on the alcohol night one. By day two, Boston Hill's 6,380-foot summit feels fair.
What's monsoon season like?
July through September: clear mornings, dramatic afternoon thunderstorms, cool evenings. The local rule — trails and mountain roads before noon, galleries and museums after two. If you're pointed at the Gila, check current fire restrictions and forest alerts before you drive; conditions move fast in fire season.
